“We are pleased to have reached this critical milestone in our development of a fully electronically steerable Ka-band, phased array mobile satellite antenna,” said Bilal Awada, CTO of C-COM Satellite Systems Inc. “The 1024 element prototype -Antenna performed better than expected. We were able to stream video, surf the web, run speed tests and have a nondisruptive video conference through Webex, “added Awada.

“Over-the-air measurement results have shown the high performance of the compact, scalable antenna modules and validated our simulation model of the architecture for larger panels,” said Professor Ali Safavi-Naeini, director of CIARS (Center for Intelligent Antenna and Radio.). Systems) at the University of Waterloo.

“This modular, intelligent technology platform offers a cost-effective solution for a wide variety of applications – from landline to mobile satellite broadband services and the rapidly emerging millimeter-wave 5G cellular services,” he added.

Phased array antenna

These successful first tests are a significant development for C-COM. The company can now confidently move forward and continue testing on several different satellites to confirm the interoperability of this new antenna design. Ensuring interoperability with satellites is an important step before the company allocates the additional resources necessary to develop a commercial product based on this new technology. The new phased array Ka-band antenna is expected to open up new vertical mobile markets (land, marine, aerospace) for the company. Prototyping of a 4000 element antenna using the same building blocks that were used to build the 1000 element antenna is underway, as is planning for the commercialization phase of this new antenna.

The story goes on

“Today we are much closer to our goal of providing an affordable, electronically steerable antenna system that can be operated on the latest constellations of LEO, MEO and GEO satellites and play a significant role in providing broadband solutions to consumer and corporate markets will play. ” worldwide, “said Dr. Leslie Klein, President & CEO of C-COM Satellite Systems Inc.
