How Huawei is utilizing good antenna know-how to enhance Wi-Fi 6

Huawei strengthens its innovation in the Wi-Fi 6 network environment thanks to the use of intelligent antenna technology.

From the point of view of Huawei’s Wi-Fi CTO from the data communication product line, Dr. Doron Ezri, who stated that Wi-Fi 6 is already improving connectivity in the business environment thanks to its updated MU-MIMO technology.

Ezri told MyBroadband that smart antenna designs vary by manufacturer, and that both hardware and algorithms determine their effectiveness when used with Wi-Fi 6.

“When it comes to the physical smart antenna itself, our engineers have done an excellent job making many smart antennas in a small form factor – 12 + 4 antennas – that are probably the best in the world,” said Ezri.

He stated that Huawei’s smart antennas have been lab tested and offer a 20% higher data rate than the competition – showing that Huawei is a leader in smart antenna technologies.

He said that Huawei’s 5G-based intelligent antenna control and radiation training algorithm is also an industry leader.

“The fusion between our amazing physical smart antenna design and 5G-based smart antenna control is key to unlocking the power of the smart antenna in Wi-Fi 6 access points,” he said.

Ezri explained that smart antennas are very versatile when it comes to providing a reliable and stable internet connection.

“For cell edge stations with a low SNR (signal-to-noise ratio) and naturally high intersystem interference between base stations, the intelligent antenna generates a narrow beam. For example, all 8 antennas will be pointing to it coherently – increasing the SNR and reducing the interference significantly, ”he said.

“In other scenarios, e.g. For example, in high-speed stations, intelligent antennas can lead to a much better MIMO matrix, so that sending and receiving can be optimized and the data transfer rate increased. “

“Finally, intelligent antennas also contribute to the uplink / downlink MU-MIMO (we point an antenna in the direction of each station) and OFDMA (orthogonal frequency division multiple access). Huawei uses its holistic planning algorithm here and can squeeze the lemon much more strongly than the competition, ”added Ezri.

Huawei’s Wi-Fi 6 solutions also benefit from its 5G knowledge – for example in MIMO detection, where the algorithms used for massive 5G MIMO detection also apply to Wi-Fi MIMO detection.

Another good example of how 5G technologies help with Wi-Fi 6 technology is downlink MU-MIMO precoding.

The Wi-Fi 6 standards do not dictate how downlink MU-MIMO precoding should be done. Hence, Huawei uses its unique NSP (zero space projection) precoding algorithm, which is up to 11dB better than its competitors.

All of this contributes to Huawei’s goal of improving Wi-Fi 6 performance for homes and businesses.
