Intelsat and Airbus ship jets with in-flight antennas to Cathay Pacific
The delivery transaction is one of the first since Intelsat renamed the recently acquired Gogo Commercial Aviation and continued its business under the Intelsat name.
The first factory-installed Intelsat 2Ku system in a Cathay Pacific A321neo aircraft.
Intelsat announced that the first factory-installed Intelsat 2Ku system has been shipped in an A321neo aircraft. The 2Ku system was installed by Airbus at its Hamburg, Germany facility as part of its High Bandwidth Connectivity Service (HBCS) and delivered to Cathay Pacific.
The Intelsat 2Ku antenna enables airlines to access the global Intelsat network and thus in turn a high-performance in-flight entertainment and connectivity (IFEC) experience for their passengers and crew members. The ability to offer airlines the factory-installed option means Intelsat’s services are immediately available when an airline receives their new aircraft.
Commenting on the development, Dave Bijur, Senior Vice President, Commercial, Commercial Aviation at Intelsat: “We are honored to be working with Airbus and Cathay Pacific to create this extensive catalog offering. As part of the world’s largest satellite company, this is a great opportunity to expand our services and the fleets we serve. We have worked with Airbus to deliver Linefit aircraft and we are excited to make this a reality. “
Vivian Lo, General Manager Customer Experience and Design at Cathay Pacific, added, “We are excited to expand our partnership with Intelsat to include the A321neo fleet, adding to the fully connected long-haul fleet and regional wide-body aircraft already flying on Wi-Fi . The connection of these new short-haul aircraft is vital in the modern world for both business and leisure travel. As a premium service airline, Cathay Pacific is committed to innovating and enhancing the short haul flight experience through connectivity, 4K in-flight entertainment in the backrest and Bluetooth headphone pairing in our new state-of-the-art A321neo fleet. “
Cathay Pacific’s A321neo will fly regional routes from the airline’s base in Hong Kong.
Intelsat is currently leveraging its global orbital and spectrum rights, scope and partnerships to build the world’s first global 5G satellite-based, software-defined “network of networks”.
