MDA announced that it has been selected by the satellite operator Telesat to develop a multi-beam antenna array for Telesat Lightspeed, a broadband network of 298 LEO (Low Earth Orbit) satellites.
In particular, the Canadian aerospace company was commissioned to supply 1,000 units of the Direct Radiating Array (DRA), an electronically controlled multi-beam antenna with a phased array.

According to the company, the beam hopping technology can generate approximately 135,000 beams per satellite, which can be used to dynamically focus multiple Gbps of capacity on high-demand locations such as remote communities, large airports or large seaports.

MDA says it will invest more than $ 200 million in the project, which will create approximately 280 jobs over five years, complemented by a $ 50 million loan from Investissement Québec in support of economic activity and the specialized technical workforce in the province.

While best known for its space robotics, the company has provided thousands of steerable antennas for satellite constellations since the non-GEO satellite market began. For this project, however, the company says it will integrate additive manufacturing techniques with very large electronics through automated assembly in its high-volume intelligent manufacturing facility. The company is also in advanced talks with Thales Alenia Space about the final assembly and manufacture of the Lightspeed satellites in Québec, according to MDA.

“We are very proud to be selected for this important role at Telesat Lightspeed and to deepen our world-class expertise in non-GEO satellite constellations as the sector changes, MDA CEO Mike Greenley. “As we develop this next-generation antenna technology and expand our high-volume satellite manufacturing, we anticipate strong growth in our Montreal satellite systems business and high-tech workforce, while integrating our local supply chain. We would like to thank Telesat for their trust in MDA and the Quebec government for their financial support. “
