Ping1090i UAS ADS-B Transceiver Now Authorized in Australia – sUAS Information

UAvionix Corporation announced today that the ping1090i Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) ADS-B transceiver has been approved by the Australian Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) as an Electronic Conspicuity (EC).

Ping1090i is the world’s smallest 1090 MHz ADS-B IN and OUT transceiver, specially designed for small aircraft that require ultra-light, low-power components. Ping1090i sends an aircraft’s ADS-B position and altitude messages on 1090 MHz and receives ADS-B messages on both 1090 MHz and 978 MHz to activate the DAA (Detect and Avoid) function. With a built-in TSO certified SBAS GPS and barometric altimeter, ping1090i allows you to see nearby traffic and be seen by airplanes and air traffic control (ATC) with an ADS-B receiver.

As part of the Australian Government’s Civil Aviation Ordinance 20.18, new standards have been released to encourage the voluntary use of ADS-B OUT systems on VFR aircraft. The aim of the change is to improve the basic VFR safety principle “see and avoid”. Ping1090i is the second EC device approved by CASA according to the new rules. The first is the uAvionix SkyEcho.

The UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) was the first to develop and apply the concept of electronic alert to reduce the risk of an airborne collision. Ping1090i transceivers are used in several UAS applications in the UK and Australia as a direct result of these advanced EC directives.
