Ottawa-based satellite operator Telesat has partnered with ThinKom Solutions to develop antennas for Telesat’s upcoming Lightspeed fleet of broadband low-earth orbit satellites. Telesat speaks of downlink speeds of 830 Mbit / s.
The two companies will work together to enable the ThinKom Ka2517 antennas to operate on the fully integrated 298 satellite and ground network, which is expected to enter service in 2023. The efforts under the agreement include the integration of the Ka2517 as a complete aeronautical user terminal solution, followed by the formal type approval of the Ka2517 in the Telesat Lightspeed network.
Based on the high performance and efficiency of the Ka2517 antennas and Telesat’s advanced LEO satellite network, downlink speeds of up to 830 Mbit / s and uplink speeds of up to 200 Mbit / s are expected to a single aircraft.
The Ka2517 antennas have already been successfully tested on Telesat’s Phase 1 LEO satellite, which confirms the tracking of the LEO satellite, extremely high spectral efficiencies and an extremely low latency of 20-40 ms. Additional tests will be performed to validate handovers both within and between satellites on the Ka2517 terminal when the Telesat Lightspeed satellites are in orbit.
