ThinKom’s flat Ka-band phased array antenna was selected by Inmarsat for its impressive reliability and performance.

ThinKom Solutions has announced that it is supplying its ThinAir Ka2517 aero satellite antennas GDC technology, in favor of Inmarsat Next-generation GX terminal and associated in-flight broadband services.

ThinKom’s flat Ka-band phased array antenna was selected by Inmarsat for its impressive reliability and performance. The selection was the culmination of more than 18 months of collaboration and field tests between ThinKom and GDC.

The Ka2517 will serve as a key technology supporting Inmarsat’s GX Aviation Broadband Satellite Inflight Connectivity (IFC) solutions, including the new North American IFC service GX + announced earlier this year by Inmarsat and Hughes Network Systems.

The Ka2517 antenna is based on ThinKom’s patented VICTS technology. VICTS antennas have accumulated more than 18 million hours of operation in more than 1,550 commercial aircraft, with a mean downtime (MTBF) of over 100,000 hours.

The flat radome from ThinKom minimizes air resistance and reduces fuel consumption. The VICTS antenna offers industry-leading spectral efficiency and throughput, as well as uninterrupted pole-to-pole connectivity at extremely high and low elevation angles. In addition, the very low power consumption of the antenna leads to very little heat generation in the radome and enables uninterrupted gate-to-gate operation even at high ambient temperatures with full solar radiation.

Bill Milroy, Chairman and Chief Technical Officer of ThinKom Solutions, commented on the antenna: “The Ka2517 antenna fully complies with the new legal requirements, including WRC-19 EISM and ITU Article 22, and ensures that no terrestrial 5G cellular networks are used or with GEO satellites when used in NGSO networks. It also offers the switching speed and flexibility to work seamlessly with new multilayer GEO, HEO and NGSO satellite networks. “

The next generation IFC terminals from GDC with ThinKom antennas have received an additional type certificate (STC) for Boeing B737-700 aircraft. GDC has planned a full range of STCs for the Airbus A320 Family, other B737 models, and Boeing B787 and B777 aircraft in early 2021.
