Video premiere: “Ants In The Antennas” by PhotoSynthesizers
From the artist : “Ants In The Antennas” is the first release in a series of music singles and video episodes from PhotoSynthesizers’ newest project, The World’s Fair. The song was written in the summer of 2020 and is inspired by the power of the collective consciousness working together to overcome the pandemics our society is facing. COVID and systemic racist injustices against black and brown people. It’s tipped “Ants In The Antennas” because it relates this pooled awareness to the power of ant colonies that are often seen small; However, it is strongest and is transmitted by silent signals such as ant antennas or radio antennas to those with similar frequencies. The song also explores our musical journey as a PhotoSynthesizer returning to our origins of songwriting as a duo.
The video concept developed from a larger series of stories from the overall project The Worlds Fair. The video is a story of those who are adored; However, it has not always been remembered and surrounds the journey through life of two characters living off the grid and sustained by a past of undesirable circumstances. Often forgotten and unnoticed by society, the two characters face their own individual challenges and traumas with the outside world and have to rely on each other to move forward. However, their relationship is rich in complexity, but overall, it is possible that their humanity will be heard.
Richmond, VA, hip-hop-rock-fusion duo PhotoSynthesizers are back with “Ants In the Antennas,” their first installment of the World’s Fair – a video series that extends to the release of a project of the same name. The duo, consisting of rapper and lyricist Maurice “Barzencode” Osion and producer Josh Bryant, is known for integrating guitars and synthesizers into otherwise traditional hip-hop. Such a style allows them to bypass the line between hip-hop and rock, effectively creating fresh space and a sound that is clearly unique.
The rhyme-rock hybrid came about when the two met through a local release in the group’s hometown. Although Barz and Bryant contribute significantly to the sound of the synthesizers, the duo has accompanied each other in the past with a family of musicians for their live shows. Barz layered rhyme schemes with Bryant’s heavy production of 808, guitars and synthesizers are a double helix of hip-hop and rock that provides the perfect timing for jumping into other musical genres that have shaped their signature sound.
It’s been less than a year since PhotoSynthesizers released their 2020 LP Apollogy. “Ants In the Antennas” already shows a sound improvement. Though Osions cut rods, they smoothly deliver on a minimalist and enticing beat. Soft keyboard undertones contrast the camping scene full of alcohol and reverse movie cigar smoking. The video depicts the group’s musical journey, often revered but not remembered, as demonstrated by Bryant’s camouflage and lurking nature. This is the first of three videos in PhotoSynthesizers’ WorldS Fair video series due to be released later in 2020.
“Ants In The Antennas”, a story about the musical journey of the group where the smallest is the strongest, often revered but not remembered. The entire project, The World’s Fair, was conceived in the midst of COVID when the group was no longer able to produce and rehearse music in person and rely on file sharing. This is the first of three videos in PhotoSynthesizers’ WorldS Fair video series due for release later in 2020. Our eyes and ears are tense.
