Vodafone Deutschland switches on 2,200 new 5G antennas
According to its own information, Vodafone Germany switched on more than 2,200 antennas live for the new 5G network around 800 locations across the country.
With 5G activation in numerous locations in Germany, the new 5G network is now available to more than 20 million people where they live and where they spend their everyday lives.
In 2019, Vodafone activated the first 5G network in Germany with the aim of supplying 10 million people with 5G by the end of 2020 and 20 million people by the end of 2021. Both goals have already been achieved, said the operator.
In total, more than 7,000 5G antennas are now activated at almost 2,500 locations in the Vodafone network. Vodafone is the only network operator in Germany that uses 5G technology from all three frequency ranges. The operator is building 5G with frequencies in the high, medium and low bands. These frequencies differ in their physical properties and are used for different purposes.
High bandwidths are required in places where a particularly large number of people use their smartphones at the same time in a small space. In the high band, 5G brings precisely these extremely high bandwidths. More than 1,000 5G antennas from Vodafone already enable speeds of up to 1,000 megabits per second close to around one kilometer.
Due to the comparatively small range, the expansion of 5G with frequencies from the high band would be practically impossible. In order to bring 5G not only to large cities but also to the countryside, Vodafone also uses frequencies from the low band. The low band covers particularly large areas of up to eight kilometers with 5G and bring the fast network into houses with up to 200 megabits per second and very good signal strength. This is especially important for the home office and home schooling. In addition, frequencies from the medium band are used in urban residential areas. They manage up to 500 megabits per second and each supply an area of around 3 kilometers with a network.

Despite the difficult starting conditions, we are really stepping on the gas with our expansion. Germany now occupies a top position in Europe for 5G and our network continues to grow.
